In the past three years lens design and construction has excelled. It has needed to in order to keep up with the ever increasing resolving power of the latest CCD and Cmos sensors. It won’t be long before we have 2 micron pixels with super sensitivity. As a result lenses are far sharper and deliver a higher contrast image than ever before. This is all very well for sharpness seekers and MTF graph readers but some of us creative image makers now face a dilemma. We need to reduce optical contrast and scatter some light without compromising sharpness. In the days of film some of the halation effect was caused by light reflecting off the base of the film and activating surrounding silver halide crystals. This scatter was partially controlled by an anti halation layer on the film surface but not all films were equal. We had a choice. Portrait films had more halation, lower contrast and reduced saturation etc. In the early digital era we were helped to some extent by lenses being rather flary and soft. Now though, digital is here and it screams sparkling clarity at every level.

Post production can help but there really is no substitute for glass. Glass filters scatter light in a way no algorithms will ever match. Glass is fast, easy and instant. If you want a very strong effect it is always best to go part way with glass and add the rest in Photoshop later. Glass solutions are non reversible but stunningly beautiful.

When will I receive my order? 

Tiffen filters are a very sought after product in the UK and as such we cannot possibly keep up with the demand for such a large range of filters. We order directly from the UK supplier when you place an order.

If they have stock in the UK you will receive your filter within a week.
If the US manufacturer has stock you should expect to receive your order approximately 2 weeks after you place your order.
If they do not have stock an order is submitted for your filter to made up especially and this can take 4 – 6 weeks.

As soon as we receive your order we will contact our supplier and get back to you with an ETA.

A few notes about the Pro Mist family

Warm Pro Mist filters: If you shoot transparency film, with a custom white balance or with the factory presets you might want to consider using the Warm Pro Mist filters. For just about every other process it is easy to control the warmth of image tone in post production so I tend to recommend post production tweaks for RAW stills shooters.

Regular Pro Mist filters: Pro Mists deliver a slight lift or fogging that has an instant low contrast look. If you want the lightness and shadow lift then the original Pro Mist range of filters are for you. The word mist is in the title for a reason.

Black Pro Mist filters: For just about every other application I’d recommend the Black Pro Mist filter. It will make your heart sing when you view your pictures on the back of the camera. If you think the effect is too much it definitely is, choose a lighter grade. My advice is to be subtle. When I am shooting portraits I am not looking for the Instagram effect. I want to alter the optical quality and resulting digital file in a gentle considered way that will look amazing in print.

A note about grades: Pro Mists filters range in strength from 1/8th to 3 with 1/8th having the least effect and 3 having the most effect.

Pro Mist Filter Grades: 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 3

Accept that 1/8th gives a look that makes you ask “Is there a filter on that shot or not”? 1/4 is more obvious, but to the non professional the shot taken with a 1/4 Pro Mist filter will look natural. 1/2 is obvious to everyone that some diffusion has taken place. 1 is a statement, 2 delivers the look of a 70’s erotic movie and 3 is just too much for anyone.

My story, love affair with filters: I joined the BBC as a cameraman in 1984 and not long after that I was introduced to a wooden box of glass filters. These were the latest Tiffen Pro Mist filters designed to fit a 4″x4″ Arri matte box. There were a few Harrison fog filters in there too. For my first few years we shot using Ikegami analogue tube cameras and then eventually we switched to the Sony CCD cameras. I also had several attachments as a clapper loader to the BBC Bristol film drama unit and we shot there using 16mm Aaton or Arriflex cameras with Distagons. To keep a more natural look when shooting dramas on electronic tube cameras we used 1/8th Pro Mist filters virtually all the time. These tended to ‘lift’ the image and a ‘racks’ engineer in a darkened room would sit the black level of our electronic cameras back to zero accordingly. The filters scattered some of the light to emulate the halation that occurs when light reflects off the base layer in film. For more atmosphere we shot with 1/4 Pro Mist filters.

Tiffen later introduced the Black Pro Mist filters that exhibited the same subtle diffusion and halation but with less ‘lift’. This is because tiny particles of black carbon were used as the light scatterer rather than a dust of a light grey. This new grade of Black Pro Mists were soon accompanied by a Warm Pro Mist filter series that combined a subtle warm up filter with the carbon dust. Tiffen made the whole range of optical glass filters so combining a warm up with the Black Pro Mist was a logical path.

I shot transparency for the Science Photo Library during the 1980’s and 90’s and I used the warm Pro Mist 1/8th and 1/4 filters for use with my Hasselblad, a Carl Zeiss Distagon lens and Fujifilm Velvia film. This was my ‘look’. There was no option to post produce so I ‘got it right in camera’.

When I shoot with my Fujifilm X-Pro1 I choose to use a 1/8th Black Pro Mist filter as standard. I use a 1/4 Black Pro Mist for that vintage look or when I want the light sources in the shot to halate more but I’d only ever shoot with the 1/2 Black Pro Mist when I’m shooting Ballet or performance art.

When I shoot with my Canon 5D mk2  I use a 1/8th Black Pro Mist filter on my 50mm and 100mm prime lenses. The 24-70mm f/2.8 mk1 L zoom I had needed all the help it could get so I’d not use a filter with that optic. I’d use a 1/8th filter on the new 24-70mm lens for portraiture though as it’s super crisp.

When I shoot portraits with my Nikon D700 I use a 1/8th Black Pro Mist filter on both my 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8 zooms. If I want a more obvious effect I use a 1/4 Black Pro Mist.
